After 8 Mint Chocolate Smoothies/Milkshakes!

So, quick sidenote... Matthew doesn't have grey hair! haha... the light was shining on it so it made it have a little silver sheen haha! Well, at least this might prove to him that I have won our debate... he always thinks his hair is brown (very very dark brown) but it is black! So hopefully this will prove to him there are NO brown tints in his beautiful hair haha ;) Anywayyyy... on Sunday (yesterday) we had a go at using one of my Christmas presents my dad chose for me... a smoothie maker! We ended up having a couple of go's to find a good one, but I really enjoyed the final one so I thought I'd share how we made them!

We started out by trying a peach (didn't have apricots), honey, yoghurt and banana recipe... but it turned out to taste really nasty! I was all disappointed haha, so I sat on the sofa sulking while Matthew racked his brains and invented a much better one! He said it was an invention by "both of us" but I'd better give him the credit where it's due haha...

He decided to make a smoothie using After 8 mints (not the healthiest of choices) and they sure were yummy!! We only really used things that were hanging around in the fridge, so I'm sure there are much better ways of doing this (one of which might be to use full fat milk to make it a lot more creamy?) but here is what we used anyway...

  • 3/4 heaped teaspoons of drinking chocolate
  • half a smoothie cup of milk (not quite sure how much exactly, maybe just less than a pint?)
  • 6/7 After Eight Mints

As you can see we didn't make too much as there was only two of us, but that's the ratios we used so if you wanted to double it I'm sure it'd turn out the same :) And, as I said I'm sure there's much more technical, better ingredients to use... but for a make-shift, thrown together chocolate smoothie... I loved it! :)

Gold/Black Eyeshadow

First of all, a quick apology that I haven't posted much lately... I've had so much uni work on (still do) but I was getting ready today and decided to do some funky eye shadow so I thought I'd make a blog post :) I'll quickly point out that my blonde roots in my hair are pretty terrible (planning on dying my hair in the next couple of days) so if possible... excuse them! Aaaand, the fact that the flash on my camera managed to make my face look a much paler colour than the rest of my skin... oops! haha... nevertheless, I hope you enjoy seeing how I did my make up this morning :)

I've decided not to make this like a whole face kind of tutorial, as I am by no means great at make up application, I just tried out some different eyeshadow, so that's why I'll only be focusing on my eyes incase anybody wonders! :) First, I used Mac's Painterly Paint Pot to make sure everything stays in place, almost like a primer. Then, I applied Mac's Woodwinked eye shadow with a 239 brush all over my eye lid...

Next, I used a black eye shadow (the one in the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette to be precise) to go in the outer "V" shape of my eye (outer corner while taking it slightly through the crease too) and I kept blending this with a 217 brush from mac to make sure it wasn't too harsh.

After this, I applied some black liquid liner to my lashline (just a standard Rimmel one)

You could just finish with mascara, but I added Ardell's 118 false lashes, and used Mac's Blanc Type eye shadow across my brow bone. I also took woodwinked and the black eye shadow across the bottom of my eye in a thin line.

Ta-daaaa! That's it done! I hope you like it, I'm not really one to stick to a "day" eye make up or a "night" one, I just choose what I fancy, whenever... so I guess this would be more evening for most people... but for me I'd wear this pretty much any time :)

Delightful lazy eyes :( not! haha... I'm sure on most people with less hooded eyes than mine... you'd be able to see the beautiful gold colour much better! But, overall I really liked how this turned out :)

Thanks for reading!

Skincare Routine

Happy first week of 2014 everyone! So, at long last my dad has tried out some DIY! haha... definitely a good start to the new year for him! He put up a little cabinet on the wall in my bathroom so that I could save some space in my wardrobe and keep some of my skin-care bits in there. After seeing it all arranged together, I noticed that I had some how developed a little routine for my skin, rather than just using things here and there. This has really helped to regulate, and settle my skin down as it doesn't seem to have as much "drama" as it used to beforehand.
At first, I wasn't sure whether I was quite "qualified" to write reviews about beauty products, but then I remembered how useful I find reading them. Thoughts and opinions about any products, written by normal people who use them can often be the most helpful so I've decided to write a short review about some of my new/old discoveries in the world of skincare!

Before I begin, a quick over-view of what my skin is like might be useful as what works for one person, might not work for another. During my teenage years I suffered with quite bad skin, it wasn't extreme, it was just usual teenage acne prone and more oily. I didn't really use a lot of skin products on it during this time as I used cream from the doctors instead! Anyway, all's well that ends well, as my skin has improved so much over the past few years to the point where now, I'd say I'm really happy with it. Having a skin consultation is definitely up there in my "to-do's" of 2014 as I've never seen a professional about what "skin type" I fall into. However, I'd say that my skin fits in the "combination" category because it's usually slightly oily around the T-zone, can develop the odd dry patch and gets dehydrated around my forehead. I do have the odd spot or break out now and then, but usually everything is pretty mild with as I said at the beginning... much less drama! So, I think it's definitely worth sharing some of the products I use to keep my skin as normal and healthy as possible :)

Ok, so this is my little shelf of goodies that I use every morning/evening (not all at once!). A few of them have been around for a while now, and others are recent editions... there are some other products which I really like to use but for the most-part, these are my favourites :)

The first step I do, is cleansing. Now, I'll admit that I am a bit naughty... I do use make up wipes which are said to be a "no-go" by just about everybody! But, they're quick and easy (and better for sleepovers haha) so I just use ones from simple. Then, I use Liz Earle's Cleanse& Polish cleanser with a muslin cloth. This is one of the oldest products of the bunch, as I've been using this for about 6 months now so I've been through various tubes! Anyway, it wasn't love-at-first-sight (use) with this, as when I first used it I did end up with quite a few more spots than normal... usually this might put me off something, but I'd heard so many good things about it that I continued to use it. Well, I'm really glad that I did because now, I don't know where I'd be without it! My skin feels so fresh and clean when I use it... I think the clue is in the name here as it really does feel "polished"!

Step 2... would be to exfoliate. Now, I don't actually do this every day because my skin is naturally quite red, so I find if I exfoliate too much, this doesn't help. However, twice a week, I use Liz Earle's gentle face exfoliater which is seriously, so good! The little tiny beads in it (microbeads?) mean that it doesn't feel scratchy at all... it's a really thick consistency so it's easy just to buff all over your face without it going all slimy and horrible! So yep... another winner!

For the next step, I use a toner (quite old-fashioned, I know haha) which up until recently, was the Liz Earle skin tonic (part of the 3-step-set from their range) which is lovely to use, it really does soothe redness, so if you've just cleansed all your face and you're looking a bit flushed, before you leave the bathroom if you use this, you'll be back to normal asap haha...
Then, Matthew bought me a beautiful clarins set for Christmas which I'd been lusting after for a while... and inside was their toning lotion. I've only used this a for the past week or so, in the mornings, but it's been so nice! It feels really cooling, and just all the best-bits of a toner really! My mum had a sneaky try of this one too, and she went out the next day to buy one for herself... so I'm guessing Mummy Mcleod is a fan too! haha

Another extra that I got for Christmas from my mum, was the Origins Make A Difference Plus + rejuvenating treatment lotion which I've been using in the evenings since Christmas after cleansing... and I've really enjoyed it so far! I can't say I've seen a massive difference yet (as the name might of suggested) but I can feel it tingling when I use it and it makes my skin feel super soft :)

At night, before I apply my moisturizer, I have been using the hydraluron serum from boots. This is quite expensive, but in my opinion it is so worth it. My skin isn't dry, so some people might advise to steer away from a moisture-boost product, but this one really doesn't make my skin feel oily, it just stops it from feeling dehydrated (tightness or little bumpy bits). It acts as almost a sandwich filler between your skin and your moisturizer... so it's like a cement to help everything stay in place properly.

Now for step 4, to moisturize. This is the step where I have the most to choose from, as I seem to have accumulated a good few of these haha. The one I've used for the longest, is again Liz Earle's skin repair moisturizer. This feels beautiful to put on, mine is the normal/combination one but they do sell ones from dry or oily skin... however, it doesn't smell amazing, it smells really "healthy". Despite this, it works really well and makes my skin feel really hydrated and soft, so the smell doesn't put me off at all! In the morning, I usually use the Oirgins GinZing moisturizer and eye cream and... OH MY GOODNESS, they're amazing! The smell of the moisturizer is absolutely beautiful (oranges) and perfect for morning energy... and the eye cream (doesn't smell great) is really nice to stop puffy/tired eyes.
If my skin is feeling particularly spotty, I always use the effaclar duo from la roche posay. This is my second tube of the stuff as it's brilliant. I did struggle at first with it as it seemed to rub off in little bits... until my friend told me "Laura... you're using too much!" which definitely solved this haha. You don't need a lot at all and it really does help make spots disappear asap! I use this morning and evening.
Finally for this section, is the Origins make a difference plus + moisturizer, which might just be my new favourite!? It leaves my skin feeling SO SOFT! And... big advantage... it doesn't feel like I have moisturizer on when I touch my face as it seems to sink in really quickly... so I've been loving this too!

So, that's about it for my regular skin care routine... but if my skin is needing a boost... I'd use one of the two face masks I have on my shelf... either the Liz Earle Brightening treatment mask (which is clay based) or the Oirgins drink up intensive overnight mask (which doesn't really count as a face mask as you don't wash it off... but it's great). My favourite of them, is the Liz Earle one as it really makes your skin look healthy and clear, which has been really nice for Winter!

Phew... that was a lot of writing!! For once... this definitely wasn't a picture-heavy post haha. Anyway, I apologize that these aren't in-depth reviews for each single product, but rather an overview of how they work as part of a group. I hope this was of use to you, and that you might have found something you'd like to give a try! :)

Happy New Year!

Now I'm sure everybody knew this was coming... it's almost inevitable for somebody as sentimental as me, to create a blog post that remembers all the best bits of the previous year and some hopes for the new one! So I hope you enjoy a little insight into my year :) This will be another picture-heavy post showing some of my favourite 2013 memories...

This was taken in Spain, Murcia in May 2013... my first little holiday with Matthew :) It was a family trip, with my parents, grandparents, auntie and uncle and we stayed at a family apartment. We only went over for a long weekend but I have so many funny, happy memories! We did lots of swimming, eating, relaxing in the spa, shopping at little markets, walks on the beach and all other things 'holiday' ... if only I had tanned even the slightest haha!

My family :)

Next, comes my first girls holiday in Zante!! For someone who isn't a clubber, for various reasons... a trip to a place like Zante was a little worrying beforehand... but when I arrived I just had the most fantastic time! Spending time with the girls, swimming, sunning and having soooo many laughs made the whole thing so memorable!

We went to Zante's amazing turtle island! But not just by any form of transport... we hired our own speedboat which we drove across to the stunning island (shaped like a turtle)! Turtles are one of my favourite animals so as you can imagine, I well and truly enjoyed it!

We went on a boat party cruise, which again I was a little nervous about... I'd promised myself I didn't need to jump off the boat when everybody got the chance to... but much to my very own surprise... I ended up swimming ashore with everyone and it was probably the most thrilling/exciting thing I've ever done (no I don't get out much do I hahah)

After two amazing holidays... I came home to receive the verdict as to whether I'd got into University... or not. Much to my disappointment, I read an email at 8am on results day, to find that I hadn't got a place on the Psychology course. I was so gutted, until...fearing the worst, I went into college to pick up the results of months of hard work! After opening the envelope, I found 4 A grades (2 exams from June and 2 retakes from January) which I was both ecstatic and confused about (why did I not get into uni?) ... so I went to collect my art results, which were unexpectedly a D :( I was really disappointed as I put so much effort in... but there we go... that was the result! So, after an emotional day full of difficult decisions, I applied to the Sociology course at my chosen University instead... which I'm pleased I did :)

3 days on... was my 18th birthday!!! :D

This was the day I received the present of a lifetime! Disneyland Paris tickets for a week away in my favourite place, with my favourite person :)

After all the excitement, came more excitement haha. On the 8th of September, we celebrated 3 years of me and Matthew :) I felt so proud, happy and lucky all at once! (This picture wasn't taken on the day, as unfortunately I was away on holiday, so moonpig sent some surprises to Matthew's house until I got home! haha) Nevertheless... I'm so glad to have him in my life :)

Now time to chill out! I usually go on holiday once a year, or every other year... so to have this many in one year was very rare yet it's been amazing! Here, I'm in Majorca with my parents in September :) I went to Majorca with my family when me and my brother were little so it brought back lots of memories for my mum and dad :) The hotel and beach were so beautiful! It was lovely to spend time as a family somewhere sunny too!

This was probably the biggest change of my life so far... let alone this year! I moved off to University in late September... well, I say "moved off"... I only live around 40 minutes away from my chosen Uni, but I have my own little room there and it just feels a million miles away compared to living in my cosy house with my family! Usually, I'm not great with change... I spend the best part of the first few weeks of any kind of change... crying and being upset... but for once, this wasn't the case. I felt comfortable from the word go when I started Uni, which definitely surprised my family who were all ready for the emotional storm haha. I had off days, but for the most part... I've really enjoyed term 1 of University... and to top it off, I achieved a 1st in my first essay assessment... which was a real confidence boost just when I needed it!

And for the star of the show... the star of my life let alone year haha... was our holiday in Disneyland Paris :) Which I've spoken about in much more detail in one of my recent posts... but I think this picture really sums up the time we were there :) All the memories we've made together, will definitely be kept in my heart forever :) It was the most perfect end to the year I could of wished for!

After a fantastic Christmas... 2013 was coming to an end... and what a year it's been! I was sitting in the car yesterday (New Years Eve) watching the sun set on a fantastic year, and feeling sooo lucky for all the people in my life that made it so special. I've felt that I've become "myself", if that makes sense? I feel a thousand times more confident in myself and my decisions compared with how I used to. Of course, there were some hard times throughout the year, but I think for the first time I have been able to see meaning in "everything happens for a reason". I've made some lovely new friendships, strengthened old ones, and some have changed to become so much more positive. I think a combination of these friendships, having my family around me and all of Matthew's support has helped to finally make Laura Mcleod a slightly stronger person! woohoo!! haha :D

This was the first new year I spent without my family :( They were away in Scotland, but we FaceTimed, and on the plus side... it was the first new year I spent with Matthew :) For the past 3 years, I joined my family at Stirling Castle, but this year... we just had a lovely quiet one in the house, TV on, having a sing song :) It was so nice, perfect start to 2014! :)

So, with the new year having arrived already... there's a few little resolutions/goals that I hope, having written them here, I will stick to the best I can!

  •       Stress... less!
  • Start up another saving plan for our next adventure :) (Matthew)

  • Get some good, relevant work experience

  • Budget... better!!

  • Make my own decisions! This is quite an important one for me, as I tend to go with the flow as much as possible, but I find that by making my own choices, I feel a lot more comfortable and happy.

  • Travel more (not necessarily abroad)

  • Print off more photographs

  • Go swimming with Matthew, once a fortnight (not really for fitness, just because it's fun haha)

  • Maybe pay a bit more attention to my health/fitness/body

  • Be more spontaneous (bit of a contradiction if I plan to be spontaneous isn't it? haha)

  • Have a happy 2014, full of more amazing memories! :)

Happy New Year everyone, I hope it brings you happy times! :)
